Abbotsbury Swannery and Children Farm

Whilst we were in Dorset on our holiday this summer we visited Abbotsbury Swannery and children's farm making use of the Tesco club card deals again. We went along with Nana too with the hope to catch them at feeding time. We arrived around lunchtime at the Swannery and realised the feeding time was not on until 4pm. To bide some time we decided to try out the children's farm too. A little walk (longer then it makes out) down a country lane and we arrive. S was in a foul mood this day due to the lack of sleep, however she perked right out of it went she got to feed a guinea pig. Just look at that cheeky smile as she tries to force feed it a carrot...

We decided to skip the indoor play areas as the weather was too nice to be inside and instead browsed the animals. As we were in the animal area the ponies were being taken for small walks (extra charge). Of course the girls wanted a go. S looked tiny on the miniature pony.

... but both girls loved it and have since started pestering for pony riding lessons...

It was almost time to head back down the lane to the Swannery as we didn't want to miss the feeding time, but there was just enough time for J to have a go at some court yard games.

I wasn't sure what to expect at the Swannery but at a price of £11.50 per adult on the door and £8.50 for children over 5, I was expecting something wow! (We used Clubcard vouchers)

As we walked down to the water we saw a few nests with swans near by. The path leads straight down to the water and looking out on one side this is the view...

...with this to the other side... SWANS!

....there were more paths to take that would take you for walks around the waters edge. We were early for the feeding to guarantee we didn't miss it.

Whilst we waited S discovered the alcohol gel stations...

...which we would not leave alone, she must have had the most sterile hands in the Swannery....

... the swans put on a bit of a fly by whilst we waited too...

... it was then time for the feeding. The girls got given a bucket between them whilst everyone else got one each which I thought was VERY unfair. After complaining we were given another scoop so both girls could go together. (Others were siblings too with their own buckets!)

They loved being able to go inside the enclosure and the excitement the swans gave off as they knew they were being fed.

Feeding involved scooping the feed up and throwing it out to the water.

There were literally hundreds of swans... I have never seen and probably will never see that many swans again in the same place.

After feeding time we walked back up to the car via the go karts. J insisted that she wanted to have a go, and as her legs could just about reach the pedals there was no stopping her...

...she even got Nana to join in a race around the circuit with her. amongst the rolling Dorset hills.

It was a lovely day out with Nana whilst on holiday and another memory made for the girls.
