MACHINES Congleton... a gym like no other!

Since the start of the school year I have been taking some time just for me. I was planning to keep it a secret and just see where it took me but I am enjoying it so much I just had to share. If you are local to Congleton or Macclesfield it may benefit you too! So, what have I been doing for just one hour a week that is improving my mental well being AND my physical health at the same time?

I am attending a gym like no other, as it is more like a studio. There is no treadmills in rows nor the posers that like to show off in front of the mirror, neither is it so big that you are just a number. When you join you become a member of the family, somebody worthy or their time to train you correctly. Sounds corny doesn't it? But it works. The place is Machin-ES .

I was enticed in by another member who has lost 24Ib in the same time it took me to loose 10Ib with weight watchers. Not only has she lost the weight and kept it off, her body shape has changed too. She can now do things she had never thought were possible like lifting more then her body weight (without looking like a man) and she can complete the whole circuit of monkey bars (you will see the green bars in the posts photos). For doing this epic achievement she is rewarded by a much sought after reward... a high quality prize hoody. This is included in her usual fee's, no extra dosh needed. What other gym offers incentives that you can show off with and wear with pride?

The class I have started on is one that we have asked for. Just for mums for the school J attends. This has helped us get our foot in the door and feel comfortable with the other ladies in our class. We have been taking part in just over 5 weeks now and we all feel comfortable to join the other mixed classes as we just cant get enough.

The past five weeks have not been easy for myself though. The blog has been extremely quiet as I have been battling the germs and fatigue that comes with being ill, however, I have not missed one single session. Why? Because no matter how cr*p I feel when I turn up I always feel amazing after.

So going on to the actual class now. Its not an easy one to explain as each week it is different. The first week we used the TRX cables where we use our body weight suspended to do press ups, and rows etc. These can be varied to make it as easy or as hard as you can manage. We have also done a circuits class and a MetaFit class. All these classes don't just burn the calories you use there and then, but your body continues to burn them for 24-36 hours afterwards too, which helps ALOT in my case.

Ok, so most gyms have these classes on their long list of group classes so what makes this one so special?
They limit the numbers. Maximum 8-10 per class. This means that they can concentrate on us as individuals rather then a huge hall of bodies. I have various muscular and joint problems thanks to my gorgeous girlies and they tailor some of the exercises to our various needs. Another member has back issues due to carrying twins and again her exercises are modified to accommodate and strengthen her muscles rather then "just leave this one out" - yes I have had that said to me in the past at other classes. The BEST thing is they correct.

Wide arm Plank
I have been doing HITT workouts similar at home thinking I was nailing it every time. Apparently not. Planking especially. A little tweaking here and there and WOW... yes it suddenly works and I cave much sooner then I used too. The difference a tweak from an expert can make. Again with press ups too, I thought I was alright, apparently my arms weren't far enough out, which then caused me some wrist issues. Another one of my joint issues from childhood, and again instead of letting me have an easy ride they gave me a tool so I can still do it and strengthen my wrists progressively at the same time.

We currently have two instructors in our class so we get lots of tweaks to help us feel it more.

They join in with us showing us the moves to start with but don't actually do the routine with us, as how can they correct us? or move us onto the next level of intensity if they are not concentrating on us?

The intensity is high, as you can tell from our faces, and it is almost constant.

It isn't very sexy either. But we do it... and we do it correctly. Improving injuries not making more.

We are a little community with giggles and laughter through the sweat and groans.

After 5 weeks I am already noticing improvements.

My legs are changing shape, yes they are still wobbly, they are not miracle workers after all I have not corrected my poor diet. (Next step) My arms are getting stronger and I feel fitter. I can hold a plank for the duration I need now, ok I still shake near the end, and I can keep doing the press ups rather then stopping half way through.

I love that we have no idea what we are doing until we turn up. My favourite is when we get to use the weights or the weighted balls and pull up bars.

The gym also do 1:1 sessions where it is just you and them if you do not like group classes, or need to focus on something in particular. They also have a diet programme starting too which I am interested in finding out more...

So if you are local, why not come and check it out? There is no yearly sign up fee or contract to sign, what have you got to loose?

Or pop by and have a word with John on Facebook or twitter to find out how he can help you.

  3. This sounds like an amazing gym. I'm always so intimidated by all the slim young women with their amazing bodies. I'd rather stay home and eat chocolate.

  6. This sounds like a great gym. I love that everyone is working together and there are no model type posers with their designer clothes and full face of makeup.
